(Luxembourg, July 14, 2021) The Minister Delegate for Digitalisation, Marc Hansen, delivered the opening speech of “Discover EBSILUX – Integrating Luxembourg into the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI)” on July 14, 2021, the event that officially launches the EBSILUX project for which the Ministry of Digitalisation, Infrachain, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) are partners.
EBSI is Luxembourg’s response to a call for projects launched by the European Union in 2020 and is part of the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI). It is about using blockchain to build cross-border services that will allow public administrations and their ecosystems to verify information and make services more reliable. The EBSILUX project implements the EBSI Diplomas use case in Luxembourg. It relies on digital identity, distributed registry and digital verification mechanism of credentials/presentations.
In his speech, Marc Hansen noted the importance of providing citizens with reliable and interoperable technological solutions, stressing that “the issuance of digital and verifiable certificates and attestations is a major challenge for the public sector. […] The state must ensure that this digitalisation is done in a secure manner so that the public develops the same trust in digital official attestations that it has today in paper documents.”
In the context of EBSILUX, digital diplomas will allow automatic verification of their authenticity and the student will be able to deposit their diplomas in a secure digital portfolio. “This project can lead to breakthroughs in the transmission and availability of data from official sources. In addition, the creation of a multi-use wallet will make it possible in the future to add other credentials to the list: driver’s licenses, residency certificates or social security cards, for example.”
Marc Hansen is very enthusiastic about the project, which will help citizens become familiar with the concepts of digital identifiers and wallets. “The EBSILUX project is an important first step in creating the necessary infrastructure for the exchange of data from trusted sources between the public and private sectors.”
