Press Release: EBSILUX & Walt.id Announce Collaboration to Develop an EBSI Compliant Digital Wallet for the Project

Luxembourg, February 28, 2022

The EBSILUX Project integrating Luxembourg into the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI) and implementing a European EBSI Diploma use case at the national level has partnered with walt.id, a Vienna-based provider of self-sovereign identity (SSI) solutions for governments and businesses across industries, to develop an EBSI compliant digital wallet for the project.

EBSI uses blockchain to build cross-border services that will allow public administrations and their ecosystems to verify the information and make services more trustworthy. EBSI deployed a network of distributed blockchain nodes across Europe, supporting applications focused on selected use cases.

The Diploma use case provides digital verifiable educational credentials in Luxembourg for the purpose of transparency and trust between schools/universities, students, and employers. It presents a cross-border solution that is entirely interoperable based on EBSI principles.

To support the Diploma use case, a digital identity based on the European Self-Sovereign Identity (ESSIF) framework is also implemented. ESSIF will allow citizens to create, control, and use their own digital identity without having to rely on a single, centralised authority.

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, a member of the EBSILUX consortium, is developing the EBSILUX App, a digital wallet where students will be able to keep their digital diplomas. The collaboration with walt.id will allow the digital wallet to be EBSI compliant, ensuring compliance with EBSI’s core services APIs and standards to be able to store, verify and share information across Europe.

With walt.id, EBSILUX will result in improved access to trans-European services. More specifically, citizens, businesses, and administrations from Luxembourg and the other EU Members States will get access to services based in Luxembourg and the other EU Member States that are accessible via EBSI.

Dr. Djamel Khadraoui, Head of the Trusted Service System Research Unit of the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), said “The issuing of a verifiable diploma has been the main challenge that LIST had to implement as a Minimum Viable Product. The LIST team had a real opportunity to demonstrate the potential of EBSI infrastructure for such use case.”

Dominik Beron, Co-Founder & CEO of Walt.id stated, “It is a real pleasure to work with Luxembourg and the EBSILUX team. We are already looking forward to continuing our collaboration and pushing the adoption of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) in the public sector.”
