The lessons learnt from the EBSILUX project

In February 2023, the EBSILUX project comes to an end. The project was co-funded for a period of 2 years by the Ministry for Digitalisation and the European Union’s CEF 2020 Telecommunications Sector programme. It was developed by a consortium consisting of the Ministry itself, acting as project leader, Infrachain, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST).

Thanks to EBSILUX, Luxembourg is now fully integrated into the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI). The project set up an EBSI v2 node in Luxembourg, in order to contribute to the overall robustness and security of the EBSI.

Furthermore, in order to improve access to trans-European services, EBSILUX implemented the DIPLOMAS use case of EBSI in Luxembourg. The DIPLOMAS use case increases transparency and trust between schools/universities, students and employers by providing digital academic certificate records.

The EBSILUX consortium has developed a prototype for Luxembourg to evaluate the feasibility of digital wallets and the EBSI for exchanging digital diplomas. The EBSILUX system comprises software components for issuing and verifying diplomas and a web-based digital wallet that allows students to manage and use their verifiable credential-based diplomas.

Thanks to the DIPLOMAS use case and EBSILUX, verifying university diplomas becomes highly reliable (fight against forged, tampered or fake-university diplomas) and time-efficient through automatisation.

As a result of the project, the consortium identified a series of best practices summarized in a white paper:

  1. Define a clear distribution of responsibilities.
  2. Start with a limited number of small-scale projects.
  3. Build upon existing data models.
  4. Share knowledge between the projects.
  5. Store information of legal entities only.

Some challenges to achieve EU-wide adoption could also be pointed out in the project, including additions of new features (such as revocation), availability and interoperability of digital wallets, as well as simple and easy-to-use verifier tools.
